Karen joined Old Bailey Solicitors in 2013 and became a Director of the Company in 2017.
Karen has practised criminal law for more than 17 years, representing clients as both solicitor and advocate. She now enjoys a mix of work which includes litigating serious fraud and serious sexual offences, in particular those charged with historic offences and offences involving children. Increasingly the internet is becoming common place in the commission of sexual offences and careful consideration of what is “indecent” plays a huge role in determining the category of images and ultimately the sentence a client receives.
Karen holds a portfolio of professional clients such as those in the finance industry in the City, Property Developers, Accountants, Hoteliers, Company Directors, Departmental Head of School, Pilot, Events Entrepreneur, and local businessmen. Due to the nature of the allegations Karen’s clients face, discretion is key and all cases are dealt with sensitively and in confidence.
Karen represents clients as an advocate not only in the Magistrates court but more regularly in the Crown court and she takes a particular interest in the wide range of sexual offences, having taken on the role as junior advocate in a ‘stranger’ rape trial. In addition she represented a man who was extradited from New Zealand to face trial for historic sexual abuse on his step grand-daughter. He was successfully acquitted at trial, allowing him to return home to New Zealand.
She has vast experience in running a criminal department and currently supervises our London office, which undertakes the most serious and complex fraud and sexual offence cases. Karen is also a member of Perren Buildings Chambers and is regularly instructed as an advocate by other firms of solicitors.
Karen is known to be a safe pair of hands, an advocate who is thoroughly prepared and who fights for her clients and was described recently by a client as someone who “listened and did not judge”. Karen is regularly invited as guest trainer by the Inner Temple to take part in the Bar’s New Practitioner course on the subject of ethics, to give a solicitors perspective and has previously lectured lawyers for 7 years and organised exam training weekends.
