Meet the Team - Lesley Fleming

This is the sixteenth in a series of posts designed to provide you with some information about the team at Old Bailey Solicitors, what they do and why they do it!

Today its the turn of the indomitable matriarch of the firm, Lesley Fleming

What is your job title?

Paralegal

How long have you been with Old Bailey Solicitors?

16 years 7 months

What did you do before joining Old Bailey Solicitors?

Most of my working life has been in solicitors’ offices going back to when most practices covered all aspects of the law. However, the previous 16 years before I joined OBS I worked mainly in conveyancing and family law although I did some criminal case work from time to time.

What made you decide to work for a firm of criminal defence specialists?

I was lucky enough to join a firm, initially as a temp, which specialised in criminal law (and family and employment at the time). I was always interested in criminal law and was happy to work solely for a criminal defence firm when the opportunity arose.  I enjoy helping people and this type of work enabled me to meet with clients on a more regular basis.

Describe your typical day at work

Preparing cases for crown court trials including meeting with clients to take instructions either in the office or in prisons, liaising with Counsel and meeting with witnesses.

I also answer the phone when no one else is available and I make my fair share of tea and coffee!  I also enjoy the social aspect of work.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The variety.  Every day is different and every case is different.

What do you find most challenging?

I.T. issues, answering the phone when I’m already rushing against the clock and dealing with the CPS or Courts Service.

If you could implement one single change to the criminal justice system, what would it be?

Protect a defendant’s identity in cases involving allegations of rape because of the stigma attached to an accused who is subsequently acquitted.
