What is your job title?

Solicitor-advocate

How long have you been with Old Bailey Solicitors?

I have been associated with Old Bailey Solicitors for over 15 years

What did you do before joining Old Bailey Solicitors?

I was a criminal barrister

What made you decide to become a criminal defence specialist?

It was a natural fit: The work was interesting, challenging and varied and I knew I could be good at it.

Describe your typical day at work

I mostly deal now with clients facing serious criminal charges: A typical day could therefore see me in the Crown Court for a jury trial or an administrative hearing, meeting a client for a case conference or sat at my desk putting in the hours of preparation necessary for such cases.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The challenge to find the best way to get the right message to my audience; whether that is my client, another lawyer, the judge or the jury.

What are you especially good at?

Assessing and understanding the capabilities of clients who have mental health issues.

If you could implement one single change to the criminal justice system, what would it be?

To increase diversion of the mentally ill away from the criminal justice system altogether.

Brian has been practising in criminal law for over 20 years and specialises in advocacy in sensitive or complex cases. He has significant experience in the Court of Appeal and has appeared in The House of Lords.
