Meet the Team – Jill Joyce

Meet the Team - Jill Joyce

This is the eighth in a series of posts designed to provide you with some information about the team at Old Bailey Solicitors, what they do and why they do it!

Today its the turn of solicitor with a heart, courage (and brain), Jill Joyce

What is your job title?

Associate Solicitor

How long have you been with Old Bailey Solicitors?

5 and half years

What did you do before joining Old Bailey Solicitors?

I worked in the Magistrates’ Court as a Legal Adviser (Court Clerk) for Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunal Service.

What made you decide to become a criminal defence specialist?

Having spent 16 years working within the Criminal Justice system, I have always sympathised with people who are brought before the Court.  Defence work seemed to be the natural career path choice for me. I enjoy using my extensive knowledge of Magistrates’ Court procedure and sentencingguidelines to help clients.

Describe your typical day at work

No two days are the same. A typical day could involve attending the police station or Magistrates’ Court, preparing files and supporting / interviewing clients

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Helping and supporting people through the court process. I also work with a fantastic team at Old Bailey Solicitors.

What do you find most challenging?

Trying to liaise with other agencies who are overstretched and underfunded.  We all understand that this is the case but it can be tremendously frustrating to constantly receive no response when you are trying to negotiate a sensible outcome for your client.

If you could implement one single change to the criminal justice system, what would it be?

A fairer legal aid system.  The odds are already stacked against most defendants.  Further penalising those that are not able to pay just makes matters worse.
